William “Tell” Tillich , Oscar Isaac precisely, is a former prisoner who, keeping a low profile and “contenting himself” with winning small sums, spends his days alone moving from one casino to another playing Black Jack and counting cards.
He lives in motel rooms which, from time to time, changes, like a ghost without a trace. Despite his attempts to go unnoticed, however, he is noticed by La Linda ( Tiffany Haddish ) a woman who is in charge of connecting promising poker players with possible investors but declines the offer.
One day in one of the many casinos where Tell is playing he comes across a safety seminar held by Major John Gordo ( Willem Dafoe ), his old acquaintance, and things will change. At that point the player will be forced to recall La Linda and accept her proposal to try to close the accounts with her experience by helping a boy ( Tye Sheridan ) who shares with him, even if indirectly, a traumatic experience.
